Snehasadan - St. Camillus Care Home, Mangaluru
History and Background
Snehasadan, also known as St. Camillus Care Home, is the third major initiative
of the Camillian Order in India under the Sneha Charitable Trust. The idea of
establishing this center was spearheaded by Mr. Eugine Rent, a Rotarian from
Mangalore, along with the support of the Rotary Club of Mangalore Midtown.
In a generous act of charity, Mr. Rent and the Rotary Club donated two and a
half acres of land and invited the Camillians to Mangalore to establish a care
facility for people living with HIV (PLHIV). This collaborative venture was
officially launched with the foundation stone being laid by Bishop Dr. Aloysius
Paul D’Souza of Mangalore on June 1, 1998.
Since its inception, Snehasadan has evolved into a well-established community
care center.
Originally designed to support individuals living with HIV, it
expanded its scope in 2002 to include care for orphans and vulnerable children
(OVC), making it one of the Camillian Order's significant contributions to
addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis in India. Today, the center is a 65-bedded
facility offering comprehensive care and support to both children and adults
affected by HIV/AIDS.
