In India
The Camillian Order's mission in India began in 1980 with Fr. Antonio Crottis arrival in the
Diocese of Mananthavady, Kerala, to promote vocations. This marked the beginning of a
dedicated commitment to holistic healthcare and service to the most vulnerable.
Early Years and Growth:
• 1984: Inauguration of the first minor seminary in Mananthavady, establishing a
foundation for future growth.
• 1986 Onwards: Fr. Ernesto Nidini led the Indian mission, overseeing expansion and
the establishment of numerous formation and ministry centers nationwide.
• 1997: The Camillian Foundation in India became a Delegation.
• 2009: Elevation to the status of Vice Province, recognizing the Orders significant
presence and impact.
Responding to Urgent Needs:
While the Camillian charism took root in 1980, direct ministry began in 1992 with
Pratheeksha Bhavan (House of Hope) in Mananthavady, providing care for the sick, aged,
and homeless until 2006. In 1996, a leprosy rehabilitation ministry began in Eluru (Andhra
Pradesh), transitioning to HIV care in 2004.
A Focus on HIV/AIDS Care:
In 1997, the Camillians made a courageous commitment to caring for people living with
HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) amidst widespread stigma and social rejection.
• Snehadaan, Bangalore: This center provided inpatient care for over 50 people,
offering vital support and acceptance.
• Expanding Reach: The ministry expanded with Snehasadan in Mangalore,
Snehatheeram in Aluva, and Snehakiran in Secunderabad, creating a broader network
of care.
Caring for Vulnerable Children:
In 2002, the Camillians extended their reach to HIV-infected orphan and vulnerable children
(OVC). Snehasadan in Mangalore provided shelter, nutrition, education, and medical care,
evolving into a comprehensive care plan. This commitment led to the establishment of Sneha
Care Home in Bangalore, implementing a new intervention model for OVC care.
Holistic Healthcare and Diverse Ministries:
• Camillian Pastoral Health Centre (2009):This centre promotes holistic,
compassionate healthcare through training programs for healthcare professionals and
education in value-based medicine.
