Upasana

History and Background

upasana
Upasana is the formation house of Temporary Professed members of the Vice Province. The Sanskrit word Upasana means ‘to sit beside’. This house was inaugurated in 1990, though formation began here in December 1988. The major seminary formation till then was in a rented house in Koramangala and later in Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore.

The very purpose of this house was to provide a suitable ambience to the candidates to sit near the Lord, contemplating the compassionate love of the Divine healer, and to impart the same love to the sick and the poor. Upasana has been a platform for the young Religious to imbibe spiritual energy and inspiration from the Merciful Lord. As this house was planned to be a common study house for all the students from different states, it stands as a unifying factor, connecting people of different languages and cultures. Upasana was also a Novitiate house till 1996. It has also served as Delegation house. Though initially it was meant as the study house for students of both theology and philosophy, later it was changed to be the formation centre for the theology students. The students are given opportunities to exercise Camillian charism of serving the sick at Snehadaan, Bangalore.
Upasana is a formation house where the temporary professed religious who do their theological as well as professional studies. The formees stay with the Master and they occupy the first floor. Usually students after their novitiate come over here to do their theological studies. They stay at Upasana and go to Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram for their college. They do Bachelor of Theology. And along with that they can do also a Master Degree under Christ University. They have lectures, Seminars, Electives, and Thesis work as part of the program. So Upasana is basically a formation community. This year we have a temporary professed namely Cyprian who is doing professional studies (General Nursing). There is also an aspirant Thomas who has joined after MBBS and is doing MA in Philosophy at Dharmaram. The students experience community life here. They are guided periodically by the Master. Each one has his Spiritual Director of his choice and he makes regular visit to enhance his spiritual life. Apart from the Academic life on weekend they go to Snehadaan Care Centre for HIV infected children and adults for the pastoral ministry. They spent half day there and exercise the charism of caring for the sick. In the college they also take part in the extracurricular activities. When they are back to the house they carry out the assigned responsibilities. In the morning they do the cleaning of the house after breakfast and in the evening they do gardening. There is time for sports every day. The formator meets each student personally at least once a month and gives personal guidance and do follow ups.
